Movements of humpback whales in Oceania, South Pacific

چکیده

To investigate movements of humpback whales among breeding and migratory areas Oceania in the South Pacific Ocean, comparisons individually identified were undertaken using catalogues from New Caledonia, Tonga, Zealand, Cook Islands French Polynesia. These locations probably represent wintering grounds or for Group V VI stocks, as recognised by International Whaling Commission management purposes. Comparisons also made to small samples photos Colombia, Ecuador Antarctic Peninsula, representing feeding I stock. Overall, combined contained photographs 912 individual whales, 767 which Oceania. Twelve fluke matches made, indicating movement between following areas: Caledonia Zealand (2); Tonga (6, plus one dorsal fin); Polynesia (1, Peninsula (1). results add previously known connections eastern Australia westerly component (New Zealand). The data suggest little Area (western America Peninsula), although sample sizes latter region too conclude this with certainty. documented some portions indicates that stock assessments based on combining regional estimates abundance are likely be positively biased, may countered problems heterogeneity sampling effort whale distribution. In contrast recovery exhibited IV western portion V, appears remain low Oceania, presumably because overexploitation easterly V.

Genetic evidence for sex-specific migratory behaviour in western South Pacific humpback whales

Although predictable in its areas of occurrence, many aspects of humpback whale migration are still poorly understood. Nuclear DNA analysis has revealed a low level of relatedness among whales using the same migratory corridor, and has shown that closely related individuals tend not to travel in spatial association. Yet it still remains uncertain whether whales from different matrilineally disc...

Population structure of humpback whales in the western and central South Pacific Ocean as determined by vocal exchange among populations.

For cetaceans, population structure is traditionally determined by molecular genetics or photographically identified individuals. Acoustic data, however, has provided information on movement and population structure with less effort and cost than traditional methods in an array of taxa. Male humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) produce a continually evolving vocal sexual display, or song, t...

Epigenetic estimation of age in humpback whales

Age is a fundamental aspect of animal ecology, but is difficult to determine in many species. Humpback whales exemplify this as they have a lifespan comparable to humans, mature sexually as early as 4 years and have no reliable visual age indicators after their first year. Current methods for estimating humpback age cannot be applied to all individuals and populations. Assays for human age have...

Satellite tracking reveals novel migratory patterns and the importance of seamounts for endangered South Pacific humpback whales

The humpback whale population of New Caledonia appears to display a novel migratory pattern characterized by multiple directions, long migratory paths and frequent pauses over seamounts and other shallow geographical features. Using satellite-monitored radio tags, we tracked 34 whales for between 5 and 110 days, travelling between 270 and 8540 km on their southward migration from a breeding gro...

Abundance and Survival of Pacific Humpback Whales in a Proposed Critical Habitat Area

Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) were hunted commercially in Canada's Pacific region until 1966. Depleted to an estimated 1,400 individuals throughout the North Pacific, humpback whales are listed as Threatened under Canada's Species at Risk Act (SARA) and Endangered under the US Endangered Species Act. We conducted an 8-year photo-identification study to monitor humpback whale usage of...
